One way of searching for boat titles for free is via the vessel documentation search tool on the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration website (NOAA). Using the search tool involves entering the name of boat on the search field to bring up titling information on Coast Guard documented boats with the same name. The results can be narrowed if more information about the boat is available, such as its hailing port, approximate length and the year it was made.
It is important to note, however, that for a vessel to be documented by the Coast Guard, it has to have a displacement of five net tons. Boats that have a length of around 27 feet usually meet this criteria. In addition, not all states require boats to be titled. Visit the state information search on the Boat Owners Association of the United States website to check boat titling and taxation policy on all states.
The following shows how to search for boat titling information using the search tool on the NOAA.gov website.
- Go to the website
- Use the search tools
- Check the results
Type NOAA Vessel Documentation Search into the browser and press enter.
There are two search tools on the page. One tool searches by name and the other by USCG number. Type the name of the boat on the Search By Name field. Use the other search tool if the USCG is available.
Search for the right boat and click on the link to view its titling information.
