As of September 2015, the Antonov An-225 Mriya is the largest aircraft in the world, with a wingspan of 290 feet and a weight of 640 tons. In 2016, the Stratolaunch Carrier is scheduled to launch, with a planned wingspan of 385 feet.
The Antonov An-225 Mriya was developed in the 1980s by the Soviet Union. Its original purpose was to transport space shuttles, but it was then used as a commercial aircraft carrying oversized payloads. The Stratolaunch Carrier is designed by Scaled Composite, a company headed by Burt Rutan and Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. This aircraft is also planned to initially serve as a transport for space vehicles.
