Any battery brand can substitute an Exide battery as long as the cold cranking amos (CCA) are the same. Automotive batteries are not decided by the manufacturer's unit that is installed, but based on the CCA the engine requires.
CCAs are really only relative to vehicles that have to be started in freezing temperatures. The CCAs on the battery dictate how long the battery can continually pump a certain level of voltage into the engine. For vehicles that need to be started in colder temperatures, the battery needs to be able to sustain 12 volts for at least 30 seconds to ensure that the vehicle will start.
