A county, state or federal agency issues acceptable documents that serve as proof of identity by certifying an individual’s birthdate, full name and legal presence in a given sate. The Department of Motor Vehicles only accepts original documentation or certified copies of original documents, notes the California Department of Motor Vehicles. The documents include a government-issued photo identification card, a U.S. marriage certificate and passport.
Individuals who are eligible for or have a Social Security number must submit the number in their license applications. Applicants who are ineligible for a SSN must present of a letter of ineligibility from the Social Security Administration to the local DMV office, says DMV.org. Proof of residency must also accompany the application and may be in form of a recent mortgage bill, property tax document, employment document or a financial institution record.
