The provision for a personalized license plates allows for motorists to customize the alpha-numeric sequence on the plates. Personalized licensed plates can be ordered for any automobile, motorcycle, truck and recreational vehicle weighing not more than 11,000 lbs.

The customized sequence of the alpha-numeric characters, however, should follow the guidelines set by the BMV. According to the guideline, the maximum number of characters allowed for the personalized license plates vary according to the vehicle or plate.

Standard passenger plates are allowed a maximum of seven characters with one space and no more than three spaces. For standard motorcycle plates, a maximum of six characters and no more than two spaces is allowed. Specialty passenger plates and In God We Trust plates can both use up to six characters and no more than two spaces. While specialty motorcycle plates are allowed up to five number of characters and no more than two spaces.

Orders for personalized license plates my be denied by the Indiana BMV if it was deemed to be misleading or offensive to taste and decency. As of April 2015, the BMV is not accepting any new applications for personalized license plates.
