Toyota premiered its all-new 2016 Tacoma midsize pickup at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show and plans to release the truck in dealerships in the third quarter of 2015, with individual dealers reporting availability in September or October. The outgoing 2015 Tacoma, available now, starts at $20,965 as of March 2015.
While the Tacoma led the midsize truck segment in overall sales in 2014, Toyota's best-selling pickup has seen only minor changes since it first hit the market in its current generation, for the 2005 model year. That truck shared many mechanical components with the first-generation Tacoma, which dates all the way back to 1995.
While the new 2016 Tacoma still shares some parts with its predecessor, the truck features a completely new design, an all-new and more powerful V-6 engine featuring fuel-saving D4-S port- and direct-injection technology, and additional Toyota Racing Development trim levels and parts aimed at the off-roading set. The truck competes against the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon and Nissan Frontier.
