The Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, Bugatti Type 41 Royale, Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman, Overfinch Range Rover and Rolls-Royce Phantom are among the best luxury cars of all time according to MSN. The Mercedes-Benz S-class, Bentley Continental, BMW 7 Series, McLaren F1 and Audi A8 have also been recognized as superb vehicles.
The cars selected by MSN in a review of the most opulent luxury cars of all time represent the pinnacle of luxury for their respective eras. The Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost was considered remarkably reliable and comfortable for a car made in the early 1900s, and custom versions of the car included extravagances such as trim made from gold and crushed pearl. The modern descendant of the Silver Ghost is the Rolls-Royce Phantom, a stretched luxury sedan that has itself featured gold interior trim in some custom versions. While none of the German luxury sedans mentioned are the pinnacle of opulence, the Mercedes-Benz S-class, BMW 7 Series and Audi A8 have all been praised by automotive critics consistently through many years as the exemplars of the best modern luxury sedans.
The McLaren F1 stands out as a luxury vehicle not for its opulent comfort but for its world-class performance. Holding the title as the world's fastest car for over a decade after its debut in 1992, the F1 also has a number of features usually associated with more sedate vehicles, such as matched luggage designed to fit perfectly in special compartments. Like some of the most opulent luxury vehicles, the F1 also makes liberal use of gold in its interior; however, in this case, the gold is part of the foil heat shield that lines the interior of the engine compartment.
