Wuauclt.exe is the Auto Update Client for Windows Update. The operating system uses it to check for available updates on Microsoft's servers. In addition to operating system updates, wuauclt.exe can also search for updates to Windows-based software and hardware.
Windows Update enables the operating system to search for and download updates automatically so that the user does not have to look for critical fixes or hardware drivers. Users can disable automatic updates. To do so, click the Start button, type Update in the search bar, and select Windows Update from the results. Click Change Settings, and disable the feature under Important Updates.
It is still possible to manually check for updates after disabling automatic updates. To do so, click the Start button, and type Update. Click Windows Update and choose Check for Updates from the left pane. If Windows finds important updates available, it warns the user in the same window. Select the desired updates, and click Install Updates to manually install updates.
