The worst online scam of all time involved the theft of more than 160 million credit card numbers using malicious software and fraud involving more than $300 million in credit card spending. The hackers stole the numbers and used and sold the information for profit until their apprehension in 2013.
Another global credit card fraud scam involved the creation of 7,000 false identities to purloin credit cards by the thousands and use them to borrow large amounts of money. This ring brought in about $200 million before the FBI caught up with the plot in 2013. An individual known as "Dave" perpetuated another notorious scam when he wooed a wealthy Canadian woman on an online dating site and eventually took $1.3 million from her.
