What Is Windows Explorer?

Windows Explorer is a file manager available from Windows 95 onward. It allows users to explore and manage the drives, files and folders on their Windows-powered computers. Also known as File Explorer, Windows Explorer resembles My Computer and Microsoft Internet Explorer, but it is not the same.

Windows Explorer offers a graphical user interface for accessing the file systems. It is a part of the operating system that provides several user interface features on the monitor including the taskbar and desktop. To open Windows Explorer in Windows 7 and earlier versions, right-click the Start button and click Explorer. In Windows 8, right-click the bottom-left corner of the screen to access the Power User Menu, and select File Explorer.
