WiMAX has a comparable speed to Wi-Fi, but the coverage is broader. A particular WiMAX connection can be faster than a particular Wi-Fi connection, but it is not guaranteed. For example, the Wi-Fi connection at Northern Michigan University is 20 times faster than the WiMAX connection, according to NMU.edu.
Generally, a WiMAX connection with a wide range is slower then one with a small range. When it comes to coverage, WiMAX is like a middle ground between Wi-Fi and 3G/4G cellular service, because it covers more area than a typical Wi-Fi connection, but less than a 3G/4G connection. The range of a WiMAX connection is sufficient enough to cover a college campus or small town.
