In 2014, WhatsApp was the most popular instant messaging application in the world, with over 600 million active users worldwide and 70 million users in India alone. Competing applications providing similar services include Viber, Skype and Telegram. Facebook acquired WhatsApp in 2014 for $19 billion USD, with Mark Zuckerberg stating that he wanted to make the application part of the company's greater vision for free basic online services, including messaging and social networking.
