The mobile device messaging service WhatsApp collects user-provided information, such as phone number, user name, billing information and contact list. As of 2015, the information may be shared, not sold, to third parties for the purpose of maintaining and improving its services.
WhatsApp also collects IP addresses, URLs and page request data of a user's time on the app. It maintains a log of time and date stamps associated with mobile numbers and messages. Files are kept and stored, but stripped of identifiable information. The WhatsApp policy notice indicates that it will not store personal information, such as names and addresses. It also does not collect location data.
