Specific sample questions asked if the server appeared to enjoy his job as well as the respondent's perceived value based on money paid and overall satisfaction, whether any kids were in the party and speed of service. Two of the three open questions asked for suggestions on how to improve Applebee's food and service. The third open question asked for an entrée recommendation to add to the restaurant chain's menu.
Receipt and birthday information were necessary to take the survey. Receipt information allowed the chain to collect information on specific locations and employees, while the birthday information ensured compliance with federal regulations regarding information collection from minors. Drop-down boxes and open answer formats were available to answer these questions.
The Applebee's online survey required about 15 minutes to complete on a computer. The survey site did not have a mobile page, so it took a little longer to complete on a tablet or smartphone. It was also available in telephone and SMS formats. Survey respondents had the opportunity to win $1,000 instantly upon the completion of the survey, with non-winning entries entered into a weekly drawing for a prize of $1,500.
