Netflix.com, Hulu.com and Amazon.com via the Amazon Prime instant video service are popular examples of websites that allow you to legally stream movies from the Internet. Most of the sites that allow you to stream movies either require an active subscription or offer a free trial.
As of 2015, Netflix .com offers subscriptions priced at $9 per month for new customers and at $12 per month for platinum subscriptions, which unlock access to 4K content. The service has over 10,000 titles available for free streaming.
Hulu.com, on the other hand, offers free movie streaming but also advertises a Hulu Plus subscription that costs $7.99 per month. Subscribers to the Hulu Plus service get more regularly updated movies and TV shows.
Finally, the Amazon Prime Instant Video service costs either $8.25 per month or $99 per year. It has over 40,000 streaming movies and shows and includes additional perks such as free 2-day shipping on Amazon orders, access to Amazon Music Streaming, and access to the Kindle eBook lending library.
Amazon has a larger collection of both movies and TV shows than its two competitors, but Netflix offers better device compatibility, allowing you to stream shows to almost any device. On the other hand, because it airs episodes the day after they show on TV, Hulu is better for watching missed TV shows.
