AXXo is the alias of the person responsible for ripping over 1000 commercial movies and distributing them via BitTorrent. The name became synonymous with quality movie downloads; the high-quality files bearing the aXXo name on peer-to-peer sites around the world fit onto standard CDs and contained no malware.
Unlike movie downloads recorded on hand-held cameras from inside a theater, aXXo ripped movies directly from digital sources and released them before their commercial release dates. At one point in 2008, the download-tracking firm BigChampagne found that a third of all movie downloads were aXXo torrents. Real aXXo torrents stopped after a farewell message for the fans appeared on the Darkside message board, but the aXXo brand has carried on in peer-to-peer sharing groups and websites bearing the name.
