To watch MKV files, download and install a media player that supports the MKV format, such as VLC. Set up file associations, and set VLC as the default player for MKV files. Start the program, and open the file to start viewing.
- Download and install VLC
Use your Web browser to navigate to the VideoLAN home page, and click on the Download VLC button. If you use an operating system other than Windows, click on the Others Systems link, and select the version that corresponds to your OS. Double-click on the executable file once the download is complete, and follow the installation wizard's instructions to complete the process.
- Associate MKV files with VLC
Start VLC, and click on the Tools option in the menu bar. Select the Preferences option from the drop-down menu, and click on the Interface tab. Click on the Set Up Associations button in the Operating System Integration section, and check the box next to the MKV entry. Click on Save to complete the process.
- Set up VLC as the default player
Navigate to the MKV file, and right-click on it. Hover over the Open With option with your mouse pointer, and click on Choose Default Program. Click on VLC Media Player, and click OK to confirm the change.
- Open the MKV file
Start VLC, and click on the Media button. Select the Open File option, and locate the MKV file using the navigation window. Click on the file, and click Open.
