To use GroupMe, download and install the app from a supported mobile app store, sign up for an account through Facebook or email, and provide a phone number to receive a verification code. Once you have registered, create a new group, invite others to join and start a conversation.
GroupMe is a free messaging app that lets users share photos, videos and locations and use custom emojis, memes and GIFs. Any person, whether registered or not, can participate in group conversations. The group creator only has to supply a person's phone number or email address to send an invitation. Non-registered users can reply and receive responses via SMS, albeit with limited features and experience.
For convenience, GroupMe lets users view all shared photos and videos in a gallery layout. Every message has a heart button that users can tap to show support and interest. Control notifications allow users to receive alerts from select group conversations or mute the entire app. While its main focus lies in group communications, GroupMe has a direct messaging feature for one-on-one private conversations.
As of 2015, GroupMe is available for the iOS, Android and Windows Phone mobile platforms. It offers optional in-app purchases for additional emoji packs and exclusive content. Users without a mobile device can access GroupMe over the Web.
