In the online game RuneScape, chat effects are activated by typing codes in the chat box to change how text is displayed. For example, typing the code "flash1:" before the text makes the words repeatedly flash between yellow and red.
Typed text appears normally in the chat box, and the applied effects appear in the game world. Instead of changing the color for all text, some codes let players type a single line of chat in a different text color, such as red, cyan, green, purple, yellow or white. Players can also add transitions or animations to text. The "wave:" code makes text float in a wave-like pattern, while the "shake:" code adds to the wave effect by making text gradually shrink and disappear.
