Yahoo shut down the AltaVista search engine on July 8, 2013. Since then, Yahoo directs all accesses to the AltaVista search engine to the Yahoo search engine. AltaVista delivered the first online web index in 1995 and was the first search engine that supported multilingual and multimedia searches.
AltaVista offered an advanced search feature that let users set their own search parameters including file types. The AltaVista toolbar provided users with tools such as Babel Fish, a translation tool, on their computers. In 2003, Yahoo purchased AltaVista. Despite keeping the AltaVista brand, Yahoo used its own search engine to perform searches.
