Users can update Android tablets and Apple iPads using the built-in software update tools. Both types of devices automatically check for updates and display a notification when one is ready. On an Android Tablet, drag open the notification tray, tap the update notification, then press Restart and Install on the screen that pops up. On an iPad, an alert pops up letting you know that an update is ready. Simply press Install Now.
You can also check for and install updates manually. For a tablet using the Android operating system, open the Settings app, choose About Device, then select System Updates (sometimes called Software Update). Press the button to Check Now for updates, then Restart and Install. For an iPad, navigate to Settings, select General, then press Software Update. Tap Download and Install to install the update immediately.
You can also update an iPad using a USB cable and iTunes. Connect the tablet to a computer with the latest version of iTunes installed. Within iTunes, select the device, click Summary, then click Check for Update. Finally, click Download and Update.
Some Android tablets feature similar systems for updating using a computer, though these are offered by the device manufacturer and only available on some devices. The user manual that came with the device contains instructions for this process.
