How Do You Unzip Files?

To unzip a file or folder, right-click the selection and select Extract All. On the subsequent pop-up, select Extract to unzip the files to the location of the original file. This quick process is universal for both PCs and Macs.

  1. Extract a single file within a folder

Double-click the compressed folder to access its contents. Unzip individual files or folders by selecting and dragging from the compressed zip to a new location on your desktop. To extract the entire contents of the zip folder, right-click, and select Extract All.

  2. Unzip files using File Explorer

Open the program by pointing your mouse at the upper-right corner of the screen and moving it downwards if you wish to use File Explorer to zip and unzip files. Once opened, extract individual files or folders by opening the compressed folder and dragging the files or folders to a new location.

  3. Use programs to manage and unzip large or multiple files

Download a zip program, such as WinZip for Windows and Archive Utility for Macs, if your files are too large or plentiful to unzip on an individual basis. Download these programs from the App store or Internet to share your files with the cloud or unzip multiple files simultaneously.
