Unlocking an LG cell phone requires entering a network unlock code that can only be legally provided by the phone's cellular service carrier. Many LG cell phone models have a SIM card that also has to be unlocked. SIM card codes are freely available online at many places, including eBay.com.
Specific models may vary, but most of the time, the original SIM card is necessary to complete the unlocking procedure. Turn off the phone and locate the SIM card slot. It is usually on either side of the phone or underneath the battery. Insert the original SIM card and power the phone back on. Enter the SIM card unlock code when prompted; this will redirect you to the network unlock and lock settings. Enter the service provider code obtained from the network carrier, and the phone is then unlocked.
Cell phone carriers are required by federal law, as of Feb. 11, 2015, to provide customers with the network unlock code, or to unlock their phones, within 2 business days of the request. Postpaid accounts can't have any outstanding balances, and any early termination or equipment fees must be paid. Prepaid model cell phones can be unlocked within 1 year of initial activation.
