To type the degree symbol, use a keyboard with a number pad. For a Windows computer, hold down Alt, and press either 0176 or 248 on the number pad. The symbol then appears when Alt is released. For a Macintosh, press Option, Shift and 8 to produce the symbol.
Use the numbers on the keyboard's keypad to create the degree symbol; the numbers positioned above the keyboard's letters do not work for this function. If the keyboard lacks a separate number pad, copy the degree symbol from text found online, and paste it to the desired location.
Unicode is the system of codes used to produce this symbol and others. As of June 2014, it is possible to insert virtually any character from 123 different scripts using this system, including most every known alphabet.
