If both the laptop and the TV have HDMI ports, use a HDMI to HDMI cable to connect them. This allows uncompressed video and audio data to transfer between these devices, and it maintains the quality of the sound and images.
Alternatively, use a DVI to HDMI cable to connect a laptop with a DVI port to a TV with a HDMI port. This allows the laptop to send digital video data to the television. To connect a laptop to an older TV that doesn't support HDMI, use a VGA to VGA cable. Both DVI to HDMI and VGA to VGA connections don't transfer audio data.
