The top official National Provider Identifier database is available online at NPIRegistry.CMS.HHS.gov. Individuals can search for a provider using the provider's unique National Provider Identifier or by searching the provider registry. When searching the provider registry, individuals can search by entity type, organization name, individual name and location.
The National Provider Identification Registry allows users to search for a provider's National Plan and Provider Enumeration System information. The registry is updated every day and is free to use. All information provided in the registry is produced in accordance with the NPPES Data Dissemination Notice.
The NPI is a required, unique 10-digit number assigned to covered health care providers. Federal law requires providers to share the number with health plans, other providers and any entity requiring the number for billing purposes.
