Windows Media Player, which comes pre-installed on Windows PCs, plays movies on DVD and also plays an array of video formats, including .wma, .wmv, .mpg, .mp4 and .mov. Some DVDs or files may require users to download specific video codec files to view the media.
To play a DVD on a Windows PC, insert the disk into the tray, and then click the DVD title or select a chapter to start Windows Media Player. To view media stored on a computer's hard drive in a compatible file format, right click on the file and select open with Windows Media Player to begin viewing. Other options for viewing movies on a Windows PC include using Netflix or other video-on-demand websites.
