Freerice doesn't require a sign-up to play its games; however, account creation allows users to track their progress and see their donation history. To create an account, a user enters his email address and birthday. Freerice sends a confirmation email with a link to set a password for the account.
Users can then answer questions on a variety of topics, including math, English, foreign languages, science and history. Each question has a sponsor that donates rice when the user answers the question correctly. The World Food Programme uses the advertising revenue that the site generates to donate rice to countries that suffer chronic hunger, such as Cambodia, Bangladesh, Nepal, Mayanmar and Uganda.
