Users of shopkick earn points, called "kicks," for these activities, which can then be converted into rewards, such as gift cards, Facebook Credits, movie tickets and iTunes downloads. As of November 2014, the company is partnered with Target, Macy's, Best Buy, Old Navy, American Eagle, JCPenney, Sports Authority, Crate & Barrel, Sony, Arden B, Wet Seal, Simon Malls and The Disney Store. Partner brands whose items can potentially grant points are P&G, Kraft, Mondelez International, L'Oreal, Bounty, Pantene, Ritz, Pampers, Oreo, Levi's and Tide. Shopkick has been integrated at all Target and American Eagle locations in the United States, but other stores may have locations that have not adopted it yet.

The system tracks users in-store by using an audio signal that is inaudible to humans. The signal may either be broadcast directly by a device in the store or be part of the store's music system. Difficulties in getting this signal to register have been reported, and users may have to speak to the store's customer service desk to check in if it does not work automatically.
