In 1999, Chris Barton, Philip Inghelbrecht, Avery Wang and Dhiraj Mukherjee founded Shazam Entertainment Limited, which created Shazam. The app creates a short sample of the audio that the device is playing using the device's microphone. It then uses the sample to make an acoustic fingerprint, which is a condensed digital summary. On finding a match for the acoustic fingerprint, the app sends information such as the artist, song title, album cover and lyrics to the user.
Shazam lets users watch YouTube videos and find song lyrics. Users can also preview songs with Apple Music and add them to their Rdio or Spotify playlists. Shazam offers a feature called Auto Shazam, which continues to find music for users even when they are not using the app. Shazam provides real time charts that present users with music that is trending. Users can listen to full tracks by connecting to Rdio or Spotify and discover new music from the recommended tracks. On connecting their Facebook accounts, users can see the music their friends are searching for on Shazam.
It is also possible to launch Shazam on the Apple Watch.
