For a Linksys router to be functional, connect it via an Ethernet cable to an Internet source such as a cable modem. Once a physical connection is established, link computers to the device over Wi-Fi or using other Ethernet cables.
Begin by connecting the computer to the cable modem to verify the modem is receiving a functioning Internet signal. Next, connect the cable modem to the router's WAN or Internet port. Connect the router to a computer using one of the numbered ports. Once everything is plugged in, check the panel LEDs to ensure all of the plugged-in ports are lighting up.
Connect to the router's set-up page by opening a browser on the computer and navigating to 192.168.1.1. Enter the user name and password. The default user name is "admin," and the default password is blank. It may be necessary to click MAC Address Clone under setup and run Clone My PC's MAC. You can reach many other settings on the configuration page. Ensure the Internet Connection Type is set to Automatic Configuration - DHCP. Click on Status to view the current state of the connection. If this page has numbers for the IP Address and Default Gateway, the router is properly configured. Otherwise, additional troubleshooting may be necessary.
