As of 2015, phone service with Pacific Bell is set up through their parent company, AT&T. A new customer can set up a residential landline for home use or a mobile cellphone account either through the dedicated AT&T website at ATT.com or by calling them at 1-800-CALL-ATT.
Pacific Bell, or PacBell as it was known throughout the state, has been providing telephone service for California customers for decades. In that time, it has undergone numerous ownership changes and has been known by several official names. It was originally separated from AT&T in a major corporate breakup in 1984, and since then it has been the target of a handful of corporate acquisitions by other separate companies.
In 2005, the company that owned Pacific Bell, SBC, completed a corporate acquisition of AT&T, and the merged company is now officially known as Pacific Bell Telephone Company Doing Business As AT&T California. In the years since, the Pacific Bell or PacBell trademarks, graphics, and other branding elements have been discontinued or merged within the AT&T umbrella. As a result, all new phone service setup that would in the past have involved Pacific Bell are now routed nationally through AT&T's customer service. This includes any local installations, which are automatically set up through local offices and contractors.
