Before applying for disability or other benefits, users can enter their information into a confidential online tool to determine eligibility. Visitors can also plug figures into a calculator to estimate the amount of future benefits, such as retirement funds. Some of the benefit planning tools require personal information, such as a user's Social Security number or mother's maiden name.
The Social Security website is available for public use 7 days a week, including federal holidays. The site is unavailable before 5 a.m. Eastern Time on weekdays and Saturdays, and visitors cannot access the site until 8 a.m. on Sundays.
