What Is a Server?

Severs are a devices used to manage network resources. They receive and fulfill requests from other computers in the network via client applications.

Servers are usually configured with added storage, memory and processing power to support the load of servicing clients. Servers often perform a single designated task. For example, file servers are dedicated to storing files, printer servers manage printers on the network, database servers process database queries, and network servers manage network traffic. The hardware and software configuration of a server depends on the designated task of the server. Most dedicated servers are generally expensive to both buy and maintain but the prices vary on performance.
