What Is SAP Basis?

SAP Basis is the systems administration of SAP software applications. SAP software applications are inter-enterprise applications used primarily by large businesses to manage data. These systems manage financial and asset data, cost accounting, and help manage operations, materials and plants. For example, SAP software is often used to analyze same store sales or clinical drug trials.

SAP software programs are some of the most popular in business management. SAP is a German company that was founded in 1972 by five former IBM employees. Today, it is one of the largest enterprise software companies in the world and competes with many of the world's largest technology companies, such as Cisco. SAP Basis administrators ensure that SAP applications are installed and configured properly. SAP Basis workers handle all of the technical aspects of SAP programs. Conversely, the applications side of SAP is handled by developers who are experts in Advanced Business Applications Programming, the programming language for SAP applications. ABAP began as a completely procedural language but has added object oriented features that are familiar to Java programmers. ABAP programs run on SAP's Netweaver ABAP Application. Prior to the year 2000, all SAP programs were referred to as SAP Basis programs. After 2000, new SAP programs have been referred to as SAP programs because of enhancements that allowed the programs to be run off of web application servers.
