While all other Samsung phones use Android as their operating system, the company has recently released a smartphone called the Samsung Z1, which runs Tizen instead. Tizen is an open source operating system, developed by Samsung based on the Linux kernel and the GNU C Library.
Originally scheduled to debut in 2012, Tizen was intended to be an "Android killer," an alternative to Android if Samsung ever had problems with Google's requirements. However promising the OS appeared, a series of delays resulted in a loss of confidence, and eventually a loss of interest in the software. Samsung later released the Z1 to the Indian market in January 2015.
