Full Answer

  1. Open the Computer window

Click the Start button on the Windows taskbar in Windows XP, Vista and 7. Select the My Computer icon. In Windows 8, press the Windows key on the keyboard while pressing the E key. This shortcut also works in previous Windows versions.

  2. Find the Tools tab

Right-click the primary drive in the new pop-up window. If you want to check the C drive, right-click the icon to reveal a list beneath the cursor. Select Properties at the bottom of the list, and click the Tools tab in the new window.

  3. Check the disk

Click the Check button in the Error Checking section in the Tools tab. Check the boxes in the new pop-up, and allow some time for Windows to check the disk for errors. If it does not find errors, it displays the message "You don't need to scan this drive." If it finds bad sectors on the disk drive, choose to reboot the computer so that Windows can fix the errors.
