To run Check Disk using Windows 7, right-click the hard drive you wish to check within the Computer folder, and select properties from the resulting menu. Check Disk can be run using the Check Now button found under the Tools tab in the hard drive Properties window.
- Open the Computer folder
Click the Start menu button in the bottom left corner of your screen. The Computer folder, which allows you to manage disk drives and hardware connected to your computer, can be found on the right-hand side of the Start menu.
- Access the hard drive's Properties menu
Right-click the hard drive you wish to inspect, and select the Properties option, found at the bottom of the resulting drop-down menu.
- Select Check Now from the Tools submenu
Click the Tools submenu from the list of tabs appearing at the top of the Properties menu. Select the Check Now button, found beneath the Error-Checking heading.
- Choose which Check Disk task to perform, and begin the scan
Check the box next to "Automatically fix file system errors" for Check Disk to attempt to repair any issues detected within the hard drive's files and folders. Check the box beside "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" for Check Disk to run a time-intensive scan for physical errors present on the hard disk. Select both boxes for a thorough scan of the hard drive. Click Start to begin the scan.
