How Do You Get Rid of a Black Screen on the TI-83 Graphing Calculator?

A black screen on the TI-83 graphing calculator is fixed by adjusting the contrast of the screen. If adjusting the contrast does not work, a total factory reset may be required. Check to make sure that the screen has not been damaged and the dark color is not the result of ink flooding the screen.

  1. Navigate to the menu

Press and release the On button, located on the lower left of the bottom row of keys. Then press and release the yellow 2nd button, located on the top left.

  2. Adjust the contrast

Press and hold the blue up or down directional buttons until the desired screen contrast is reached. The directional buttons are located at the upper right of the calculator, just below the screen. Holding the up button darkens the screen, while holding the down button lightens it.

  3. Clear the RAM

Press the yellow 2nd button followed by Mem, which is the second function of the + key. Select 7, then scroll and select All. Press 1 and then 2. Only do this if adjusting the contrast does not fix the screen; clearing the RAM resets the TI-83 back to factory settings, erasing all programs and data stored on it.
