Do Regular DVDs Work in Blu-Ray Disc Players?

All existing Blu-ray players play both Blu-ray discs and DVDs, and most also play DVD-RRW recordable discs. In addition, nearly all new-generation DVD models play CDs, including CD-RW and CD-R versions. However, Blu-ray discs do not play in DVD players.

Blu-ray discs do play in computer Blu-ray drives and PlayStation 3 video game systems. The technology behind DVDs and Blu-ray discs is similar; both feature the use of a 12 cm optical disc. However, Blu-ray discs feature blue-laser encoding and reading on shorter wavelengths than DVDs, allowing them to store up to five times the amount of data of DVDs.
