Antivirus software packages scoring positive reviews from PCMag as of August 2015 include Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 2015 and Kaspersky Antivirus 2016. Antivirus programs protect computer systems from a class of malicious programs known as malware and from a variety of Web-based attacks such as phishing.
Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 2015 scored very highly in detecting and eliminating damaging malware files, as well as preventing the phishing attacks that redirect Web browsers to dangerous pretender Web pages. It is extremely convenient with a simple desktop widget interface, an autopilot mode that lets it run quietly in the background, and a wallet feature that gives enhanced protection for stored passwords. This program also has a rescue option that offers an alternative boot mode for rooting out particularly nasty malware such as ransomware or some of the more critical viruses.
Kaspersky Antivirus 2016 got an excellent rating for detecting and eliminating malware files, and a very good rating for phishing protection. This program features an onscreen keyboard that effectively defeats keyloggers that try to capture passwords, and it features the ability to create a rescue boot disk in the event that a malware attack has locked the system. There is also a vulnerability scan that checks for software updates that Windows software may have missed, as well as for configuration problems that could cause system vulnerabilities. It does not offer automatic software patching, but it is still a very useful tool in managing system security.
