In 2015, some positively reviewed free antivirus programs are AVG AntiVirus Free, Panda Free Antivirus, Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition, Check Point ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall, and Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Free. These programs have an editor rating of at least four out of five in PC Magazine.
AV-Comparatives, an independent organization that tests and checks security software, rates the AVG AntiVirus Free program as Advanced+ in both the performance test and real-world protection test. This software also earned the best rating in an intensive real-world test performed by Dennis Technology Labs. It offers fast scan, effective malware blocking and phishing protection, according to PC Magazine.
Panda Free Antivirus uses the same antivirus technology as the paid edition. It earned a total of 17 points out of 18 in lab tests performed by AV-Test Institute. It also detected 89 percent of malware samples in the malware blocking test performed by PC Magazine. However, this program's anti-phishing ability was a bit lacking and only detected 55 percent of phishing websites in the reviewer's test.
Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition requires no configuration and works in the background. During the installation process, this program runs a pre-install scan to remove any malware. This scanning and removal process may cause installation issues on some malware-infested systems.
