To use Pixlr Express either online or on a device, users select a file to open and then manipulate it with a variety of tools that open in a column on the left side of the application. These tools allow manipulation of color, contrast, brightness, sharpness and blurring. Pixlr Express users can add borders, overlays, effects, stickers and text. Pixlr Express allows cropping of photos or other types of images, resizing, straightening and removing red eye.

Pixlr Editor allows users to do most of these tasks, plus drawing with the mouse using digital pencils or other types of implements, filling areas with color and manipulation of layers. Web application users can open a file from the File menu at the top of the page or from the window that opens upon start-up. Pixlr Editor also allows creation of new images that can be built with the mouse-operated drawing implements and various other tools. Adjustments include hue and saturation, inversion of colors and artful effects such as pixelation, pointillism, turning photos or drawings into poster-like images and coloring images in a pastel palette.
