As of March 2015, T-Mobile does not offer any free cellphones for new customers. However, qualifying customers who enroll in a new cellular plan can purchase smartphones via the Equipment Installment Plan without a down payment.
T-Mobile states that "well-qualified" customers qualify for the Equipment Installment Plan, but the company does not specify the exact requirements that guarantee approval. Approval is based on credit, and an applicant's credit score determines the minimum monthly payment, as well as whether a down payment is necessary.
Customers must pay off the full balance of the cellphone or tablet within 24 months. If a customer cancels the device's contract, then the remainder of the Equipment Installment Plan is due immediately.
