OpenStack is open-source software used for cloud computing, chiefly as an infrastructure-as-a-service solution. It works with mainstream enterprise as well as open-source technologies, controlling processing, storage and networking resources through a data center.
Users and developers have free access to OpenStack through a browser dashboard, a command-line user interface or a specific application programming interface. Leveraging an open-source cloud solution means that a company is not limited by its existing technology infrastructure in communicating, collaborating or integrating with employees, partners and customers. OpenStack software is managed by the OpenStack Foundation, a non-profit organization that was established in 2012. As of 2014, hundreds of well-known businesses such as Comcast, Best Buy and Paypal, use OpenStack software and participate in the project.
