Microsoft and GCF Learn Free offer free online courses for Excel. Whereas the training center by Microsoft has courses for Windows, Mac OS X, Android, iOS and Windows Phone platforms, GCF Learn Free only offers courses for the Windows edition of the program.
Offering both text and video courses, Microsoft's training center offers free Excel courses in a linear manner. After picking a subject, users can only navigate between the courses by using the Next and Back buttons on the top. The courses advance at a slow pace and are easy to follow. Use the search box at the top right to find training on a specific feature. The training center has courses for Excel 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2016.
In comparison, GCF Learn Free offers a nicely cataloged database of online courses. Once the user picks a subject, the website offers a list of available courses. Although GCF does not have video courses, all course content includes screenshots and examples.
GCF also has mobile applications that teach Excel. The applications are available for Android, iOS and Kindle devices, and all mobile apps are free to download.
Microsoft offers a free trial of its Office suite that users can use to practice the training content. The trial lasts for a month. A Microsoft account is necessary to download the trial. It requires at least Widows 7 or Mac OS X 10.10.
