Larry Page and Sergey Brin created Google Inc. in 1998, making it 16 years old as of 2014. Its original function was as a search engine, but it has since grown to include other capabilities and services such as e-mail, social networking, document storage and Internet browser software.
From 2000 to 2004, Google gained notice when it became the client search engine for Yahoo!. This partnership greatly increased Google's visibility and usage. By 2004, Google had released its initial public offering, which catapulted the CEOs and some stockholders into billionaire and millionaire status overnight. Two years later, in 2006, Google Inc. joined the ranks of the Standard and Poor's 500 stock exchange.
