A non-impact printer is a type of printer where the print head does not strike the paper. The three main types of non-impact printers include inkjet, laser and thermal printers.
Laser printers utilize electrical charges and a laser beam to transfer toner particles from a selenium-coated cylindrical drum to a piece of paper. Inkjet printers spray small drops of ink onto the page. Thermal printers use heat to transfer impressions onto paper. There are two different types of thermal printers: direct thermal and thermal wax transfer.
Printers like the daisy wheel and dot matrix printers are referred to as impact printers because they work by striking a print head against an ink ribbon. Non-impact printers are less noisy and more efficient compared to impact printers.
