An MMS message is a multimedia messaging service that allows users to extend text messages to lengths longer than the 160-character limit set for SMS, or short message service, texts. MMS is also used to send pictures, videos, audio clips and rich text between cellphones.
MMS is considered a fast 3G service. MMS messages received by cellphones often cannot be accessed without mobile Internet services.
MMS was first introduced commercially in Norway in March 2002 by Telenor. It is most often and most popularly used to send personal pictures and videos from camera-equipped cellphones. Cellphone plans with text messaging allowances typically include SMS and MMS services.
