To manually back up your Android phone, first go to Settings, tap Accounts & Sync, navigate to Accounts and check Auto-Sync Data. Use your device to sign in to your Gmail account, and select the options for the information you want to back up to your cloud. Next, go to Settings, tap Backup & Reset and check Back Up my Data.
To back up media, such as photos and videos, first connect the Android phone to a computer via a USB cable. If you are using a Mac, you must install the Android File Transfer application. After making the connection, swipe down from the top of the phone's screen, tap USB Connection, select USB Mass Storage from the options that appear and tap OK. The phone's memory appears as a new drive on your computer. Open the drive, copy the files you wish to back up, paste them into a folder and unplug the phone.
To back up your text messages, install SMS Backup Plus, open it, choose your Gmail account and grant the app permission to access your Google account. To save your text messages to your Gmail account, go back to SMS Backup Plus and tap Backup. To view the backed-up messages, log in to Gmail and tap SMS.
